Fabric of Downtown: A Community-Wide Celebration Launching This Spring

This spring and summer, the Asheville Downtown Association is launching a new Downtown-wide campaign: Fabric of Downtown — and we’re inviting businesses across Downtown Asheville to help bring it to life.

At its heart, the campaign celebrates a simple but powerful idea:

You’re the Thread.

Every storefront, every block, every business owner helps weave the story of Downtown Asheville. Fabric of Downtown is a celebration of those stories and the vibrant community that stitches our city together.

From April through the summer months, Downtown will come alive with public art, flower baskets, colorful pole banners, and activations such as Downtown After 5 and the Pritchard Park Arts & Cultural Series. These efforts will be paired with a creative, community-driven installation project inspired by Western North Carolina’s rich barn quilt heritage.

Introducing the Downtown Quilt Trail

Downtown businesses are invited to participate in a Quilt Trail, creating quilt- or fabric-inspired installations that help tell the story of their business and their place in the fabric of Downtown.

Just like our popular Winter Windows Contest, the goal is to create a fun, visual experience across Downtown that encourages locals to explore, visit multiple businesses, and rediscover the heart of the city. This time, we’re extending that spirit of creativity throughout the summer months.

Participating businesses will be featured on an official Fabric of Downtown map and promoted through social media, radio, television, and digital marketing campaigns aimed at encouraging Buncombe County locals to spend time Downtown.

Ways Businesses Can Participate

There are many ways to join the Quilt Trail and bring the Fabric of Downtown to life:

  • Hang a quilt on the exterior of your storefront (preferred for visibility)

  • Install an interior quilt or fabric-inspired display

  • Partner with a local quilter or artist

  • Commission a barn quilt that reflects the story of your business

  • Create a quilt- or fabric-themed drink, dish, retail feature, or promotion

  • Collaborate with another Downtown business

While exterior installations help create a strong visual impact across Downtown, interior displays absolutely count as well.

Key Dates

March 31 – Registration deadline for businesses to be included in campaign materials and mapping
April 14 – Official campaign launch (we encourage installations to be up by this date)
May 1 – Quilt Trail installations fully installed
May–August – Campaign in full swing with ongoing marketing and Downtown activations
