Downtown Visitor Trends – February 2026

February continued the winter pattern for Downtown Asheville, with 549,400 visits and 421,500 out-of-market visitors (+5.7% YoY). The extended downtown workforce was 15,200, while the resident population remained stable at 2,300, suggesting that changes in visitation are driven by travel and programming rather than shifts in who lives or works downtown.

South Slope stood out, posting +17.2% year-over-year growth, even as overall Asheville visitation was slightly down (-3.6% YoY). This highlights how some downtown neighborhoods see higher foot traffic in winter compared to broader citywide trends.

Key insights:

  • Winter baseline: February visitation is lower than peak fall and holiday months, reflecting a typical winter slowdown.

  • District-level variation: South Slope continues to show strong engagement relative to other downtown areas.

  • Repeat visitation matters: Downtown sees roughly 2 visits for every unique out-of-market visitor, emphasizing the importance of repeat foot traffic for supporting local businesses.

Looking forward:

February 2026 shows that downtown remains active even in winter, and targeted programming, events, and placemaking efforts can help maintain foot traffic through traditionally slower months.
