BE A PART OF THE FABRIC OF DOWNTOWN
Behind Downtown Asheville is a long and storied history of hard work, intentional decision making, and the people who never stopped showing up.
Business owners who have stayed through the ups and downs, artists who make it worth coming to, employees who keep it running every day, and the locals who know that it worth protecting. This campaign is a celebration of all of us - and an invitation to add your own thread to what's being woven here.

WHAT HOLDS DOWNTOWN ASHEVILLE TOGETHER?
Asheville Downtown is proud to have partnered with local filmmaker, Sekou Coleman, on The Fabric of Downtown, a short film at the center of this campaign.
What emerges is relationships, repeated acts of care, and the ongoing work of negotiating for public space. It traces that work back to the Save Downtown Asheville movement of the 1980s, when residents wrapped 11 acres of Downtown in fabric to stop it from being demolished and turned into an indoor mall. It follows the people who open doors every morning, sustain local businesses through all manner of conditions, and keep Asheville’s rich cultural memory alive. It honors The Block, Asheville's historic center of Black commerce and culture, and the community leaders, business owners, and neighbors working to reclaim its place as a cornerstone of Downtown's present and future.
Downtown Asheville is more than a place: it’s a collection of people, stories, and shared experiences that shape the heart of our community. Filmed by Sekou Coleman and premiered at the sold-out State of Downtown 2026 event, this short documentary captures the resilience, creativity, and momentum driving Downtown forward.
