The Story Behind the Fabric of Downtown

This season, we’ve talked a lot about the Fabric of Downtown — the businesses, artists, residents, employees, property owners, visitors, and advocates whose individual stories come together to make downtown Asheville what it is.

But the name of the campaign has a deeper connection to Asheville’s history.

In the late 1980s, downtown Asheville was facing a very different future. A proposal for an indoor mall threatened to demolish a significant portion of the historic downtown we know today.

A group of downtown advocates wanted the community to understand exactly what was at stake.

So they wrapped 11 acres of downtown Asheville in fabric.

It was a bold visual statement: Imagine all of this gone.

The effort became part of the Save Downtown Asheville campaign and a defining moment in the story of downtown. Community members organized and advocated for a different vision — one that valued the historic buildings, local businesses, walkable streets, and character that made downtown Asheville unique.

Ultimately, the mall wasn’t built.

Instead, many of the buildings and streets that could have disappeared became the foundation for downtown Asheville’s revitalization in the decades that followed.

Our History Inspires Our Future

Nearly four decades later, we borrowed from that history when we named this season’s campaign Fabric of Downtown.

This time, the fabric represents more than buildings.

It represents the thousands of individual threads that make downtown work: the person who takes a chance on opening a small business. The artist who adds something beautiful to a blank wall. The employee who welcomes a visitor. The property owner who restores a historic building. The resident who chooses downtown as home. The volunteer who gives their time. The advocate who speaks up when something needs to change.

Each is a thread in something much bigger.

And the lesson from the Save Downtown Asheville campaign still matters today: a vibrant downtown doesn’t happen by accident.

Every generation inherits downtown from the people who cared for it before them — and every generation has a responsibility to decide what comes next.

As Asheville continues to recover, grow, and change, it will take people stepping up again and again to ensure downtown remains a place that is vibrant, welcoming, resilient, and accessible to all.

That work belongs to all of us.

You’re the thread. Together, we are the Fabric of Downtown.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll share a new video each week highlighting the people, places, investments, and stories that have shaped downtown Asheville — and the people helping shape what comes next.
