Food Connection Announces Benefit Concert

Curbing Waste and Easing Hunger with Music and Dance

Asheville, N.C. (February 17, 2017) – On Saturday, March 4th Wicked Weed Brewing will proudly present the 3rd Annual Hunger Relief Concert at The Grey Eagle benefiting Food Connection, an Asheville-based nonprofit. The concert aims to raise awareness of food waste and food insecurity in Buncombe County and the nation with a community-focused event for all ages.

In the United States 40% of all food produced ends up in the trash. Asheville’s Food Connection combats these statistics on the local level by connecting restaurants and caterers who have surplus freshly prepared meals with local nonprofits who feed the hungry such as Trinity Place Shelter for Runaway Youth. "We serve about 200 hungry kids each year, and we now have access to incredible cuisine. It is heartwarming to see businesses and restaurants band together to support our community in this way. We are appreciative of Food Connection for being the conduit," says Amy Hobson, Residential Services Director. Since launching two years ago Food Connection, with the help of Asheville Taxi, has rescued and delivered over 35,000 fresh meals.

“Asheville is often mentioned in ‘Top 10’ lists as a food destination, but many don’t realize we also rank as one of the nation’s most food insecure places,“ said Program Director Flori Pate. “Food Connection connects some of Asheville's finest food to our neighbors in need who may not know where their next meal is coming from.”

The Hunger Relief Concert will host 3 local bands including Ashley Heath and Her Heathens, LYRIC, and Jr James and the Late Guitar. “Food Connection, like the greatest songs you wish you had written, like the best ideas that come to fruition, makes our world a better place. Flori Pate and her team had the vision and the verve to make it happen. Performing at the benefit for the third year, I have no reservations for this meal,” said Jr James Gardner.

All ticket proceeds will go directly to benefit Food Connection, as well as the proceeds from a raffle and silent auction with items donated from local businesses. Food and drink will be available for purchase at The Grey Eagle Taqueria. Doors open at 6pm and music starts at 6:30pm. Ticket prices are $12/$14 at the door for adults, $5 for kids, and kids under 5 are admitted free. Tickets may be purchased at The Grey Eagle Box Office or online at TheGreyEagle.com. Media Sponsors of this event include Dig Local and the Asheville Citizen-Times.

About Food Connection

Flori Pate, co-founder of Dig Local launched Food Connection in December of 2014 after Mary Evans at Pack's Tavern expressed her frustration with how much food they were having to throw away. Now, when surplus fresh meals to feed 18 or more are left over after a party or event, the food donor sends a text message to Food Connection. Asheville Taxi dispatch is alerted and sends a driver to pick up the food within 20 minutes and delivers it to designated shelters who feed the hungry.

Food Connection donors not only include Pack’s Tavern, but also UNC Asheville, Celine & Company Catering, Corner Kitchen Catering, Dining Innovations and others. Some food recipients included BeLoved House, Veterans Restoration Quarters, Trinity Place Shelter for Runaway Youth, Spring Creek Community Center, East Asheville Welcome Table, Steadfast House, and MusicWorks After School Program at Hall Fletcher Elementary.
