The Asheville Downtown Association’s 29th season of Downtown After 5, presented by Prestige Subaru, begins Friday, May 19. Downtown After 5 is from 5-9pm on North Lexington Avenue, and is always free and open to the public.
Headliner: High & Mighty Brass Band
Co-mingling band members from New Orleans, NYC and a host of other cities across the globe, this dynamic krewe has the unique ability to combine classic New Orleans Funk and R&B with more modern Afro-Beat and Hip Hop influences.
Opener: Josh Phillips Big Band
Local favorite Josh Phillips is back with his latest and most ambitious project yet. Josh Phillips Big Band, just like the ever evolving and collaborative Asheville music scene, is a merging of musicians from all the bands Josh has performed with over the last 12 years.
“In its early days, the May Downtown After 5 had a New Orleans theme and we’re excited to bring that back for 2017,” noted Meghan Rogers, Asheville Downtown Association’s executive director. The Asheville Mardi Gras krewe will help celebrate the theme with a Second Line Parade between the opening and headlining bands.
Downtown After 5 features local, regional and national brews for sale as well as wine and soda. Plus, attendees will find plenty of great local fare from food vendors:, DOGS, Kernal Mike’s Kettle Corn, Gypsy Queen Cuisine, The Grubbery Food Truck, Scott’s Knots, Smoky Mountain Corn Roasters and Sunshine Sammies.
Each year, the Asheville Downtown Association chooses five nonprofits to sell wristbands at each Downtown After 5. The nonprofit receives $2000. May’s nonprofit is Riverlink promoting the environmental and economic vitality of the French Broad River.
The Asheville Downtown Association is committed to reducing the environmental impact of its events. Downtown After 5 features compostable food and beverage containers, staffed compost and recycling stations, and recycling info from Asheville GreenWorks.
